The St. Joseph’s Chiefs picked up two wins on Friday after opening with a loss at the U17 Eastern Canadian Championships in Wilmot, Ontario. The Chiefs defeated the Kawartha Kraken 10-6, then shutout Bellechase from Quebec 11-0. They have two more games today before the playoff matches are decided.
NATIONAL SPORTS
The Toronto Blue Jays are losing some ground in the race for the third wild-card spot in the American League. The Blue Jays dropped a 3-1 decision to the New York Yankees. Toronto is a game-and-a-half behind Texas. The Rangers beat the L-A Angels 2-1 in 10 innings.
Slugger Vladimir Guerrero Junior is expected to return to the Toronto Blue Jays’ lineup tomorrow. He’s in New York with the team after spending a week on the concussion injured list. Guerrero played well in a tune-up game in the minor leagues last night.
L-A Dodgers president Stan Kasten is addressing online speculation about the team’s future under owner Mark Walter. He says the Dodgers are not for sale and no process has started to sell the team. The speculation began after Walter recently agreed to sell the L-A Lakers for a record-breaking price.
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says he felt betrayed after Ketel Marte’s mysterious disappearance. The skipper says he has moved past it. Marte didn’t show up for a game in Boston and was later placed on the injured list with knee inflammation.
An exciting finish in Edmonton. Vincent Blanchard kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give the Elks a 22-19 win over Winnipeg. The Blue Bombers had tied the game a few minutes earlier. Edmonton leads the C-F-L’s West Division standings at 8-and-3.
Canadian teen Anna Huang is seven shots back at the C-P-K-C Women’s Open in Edmonton. She’s at 7-under-par 133 after shooting a 68. Japan’s Miyu Yamashita has a five-shot lead on three players at the L-P-G-A tournament’s midway point.
The Toronto Tempo’s 12-game losing skid is over. Isabelle Harrison had 25 points for Toronto in an 82-79 win over Portland in Vancouver. Canadian Bridget Carleton had 18 points for the Fire. Vancouver will also host the Tempo’s game against Las Vegas on Sunday.
Klay Thompson’s two-year run with the Dallas Mavericks is over. The two sides have agreed on a contract buyout. The five-time all-star intends to sign with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers. Thompson won four N-B-A titles with the Golden State Warriors.
The Walter Cup – the keeper trophy won by the Montreal Victoire – is missing. The P-W-H-L says the trophy did not arrive at its latest stop and is working with the shipping company to locate it. The cup was supposed to be sent to Lethbridge. The actual Walter Cup that’s presented during the championship is kept at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
