At the U17 Eastern Canadian Championships in Wilmot, Ontario, the St. Joseph’s Chiefs defeated the Innerkip Eagles 3-0 and the hometown Wilmot Thunder 6-3, finishing the round robin with a 4-1 record and placing third on run differential. The Chiefs face Innerkip at Noon Atlantic time. If they win that match, they’ll face the loser of the game between Norwich & Bellechasse for a spot in the final.
NATIONAL SPORTS
The Toronto Blue Jays, who have won 8 of their last 12, can win a three-game series against the Yankees in New York today. After dropping Friday’s opener 3-1, the Jays bounced back with a 4-3 win on Saturday, outhitting the hosts 15-4. Louis Varland earned his 29th save of the season, starter Dylan Cease threw six-and-two-thirds innings of two-hit ball, and Nathan Lukes hit the game-winning homer in the eighth inning.
J-J Bleday of the visiting Cincinnati Reds hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cincinnati left fielder doubled in the first inning, tripled in the third and singled in the fourth. He homered to right on the first pitch from Arizona’s Zack Littell in the sixth inning, giving the Reds an 8-2 lead. The homer was Bleday’s 21st of the season.
Chad Kelly threw three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Toronto Argonauts past the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats 39-20 on a rainy Saturday night. Kelly moved 5-and-5 Toronto into second in the C-F-L’s East Division ahead of Hamilton, at 4-and-7. The Argos tied the season series at 1-all heading into their annual Labour Day clash on September 7th at Hamilton Stadium.
Brian White scored twice in the first half to lead the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 5-0 Major League Soccer win over visiting F-C Dallas. Just 11 minutes after fans booed the American national anthem, Emmanuel Sabbi gave the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead. Edier Ocampo and Bruno Caicedo also scored for the hosts, who moved back into top spot in the Western Conference, two points up on the Houston Dynamo, who lost 2-1 to St. Louis.
Miyu Yamashita of Japan carded a tournament-record 54-hole score of 191 and tied another record for the largest lead after three rounds at the C-P-K-C Women’s Open in Edmonton. Yamashita turned in a 5-under-par 65 in Saturday’s third round to get to 19 under for the tourney, and six shots ahead of the field. Canadian teenager Aphrodite Deng shot the day’s lowest round of 63, and at 10 under is tied for sixth.
Breanna Stewart had 22 points and eight rebounds, Leonie Fiebich had 20 points and five rebounds, and the New York Liberty defeated the visiting Indiana Fever 109-102. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 25 points, while Aliyah Boston had 22 and Caitlin Clark chipped in with 21.
