Maritime League: In New Brunswick the Pictou County Weeks Crushers shut out the Chaleur Lightning 4-0.
Seniors League: At the Hector Arena, the Pictou County Pipers fell 5-3 to the East Hants Penguins. Tonight, the CB West Blackstone Knights are at the Miners Forum to take on the Miners at 7:30.
U18 Major: The CB West Islanders were defeated 5-3 by the South Shore Mustangs. The Islanders will be in Dartmouth at 1:15 to face Steele Subaru.
Maritime Major Girls U18 League: The Northern Selects outscored the Western Flames 3-1, while the CB Lynx fell 5-2 to the Surge. The teams meet again in Membertou at 11 am, while the Selects and Flames play the rematch at the Hector Arena at Noon.
High School Boys: The playoffs are set for the Millenium Cup tournament. In this morning’s semi-finals, the CEC Cougars face the North Nova Gryphons at the Antigonish Arena, while it’s an all Cape Breton matchup at the Keating Centre with Memorial vs Glace Bay. Both games begin at 9:30 am. The winners play the championship game at 1 pm at the Arena.
Rural League: A rare Sunday night double-header at the Antigonish Arena, beginning with St. Croix & Pleasantdale at 7, followed by Heatherton vs the Outlaws at 8:30.
NATIONAL SPORTS
Morgan Frost scored 66 seconds into overtime to lift the visiting Calgary Flames to a 2-1 N-H-L victory over the Los Angeles Kings. Anze Kopitar had a Kings’ goal early in overtime, but it was disallowed after video review ruled he kicked the puck into the Calgary net. The Flames have won four of their last five games.
Nathan MacKinnon scored his N-H-L-leading 26th goal and added an assist, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators 4-2 for their 11th straight home win. MacKinnon, who has scored in six straight home games, leads the league with 55 points. The 11 straight wins matches the second-longest in franchise history.
The United States beat Canada 4-1 to sweep the four-game Rivalry Series in women’s hockey. The U-S outscored Canada 24-7 over the course of four games, two of which were in Edmonton. The two teams will next face each other in preliminary round action at the 2026 Olympic Games in Italy. Hockey Canada is expected to announce its 23-player Olympic roster early next month before the Canadians open defence of their gold medal against Finland on February 4th.
Devin Vassell had 23 points and five rebounds, and three other players each scored 22 points as the San Antonio Spurs edged the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-109 in N-B-A Cup semifinal action in Las Vegas. With the win, the Spurs will face the New York Knicks in Tuesday’s championship game. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 29 points.
Fernando Mendoza, the enthusiastic quarterback of Number 1 Indiana, won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday, becoming the first Hoosier to win college football’s most prestigious award since its inception in 1935. Mendoza beat Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love and Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.
