The heat is having an impact on the Special Olympic Provincial games at StFX. Last night’s track & bocce events were postponed because of the heat. Track events will start an hour earlier at 8 am, starting with the 3000 metre and the 100 metre events from last night. Events may be postponed today – watch the Special Olympics Nova Scotia Facebook page and website for updates.

The Toronto Blue Jays opened a nine-game West Coast road trip in Seattle with a 2-0 victory over the Mariners. Dylan Cease pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and struck out nine. Jeff Hoffman worked the eighth inning, and closer Louis Varland earned his 18th save by working the ninth. The Jays scored both of their runs in the third inning. The teams play again Saturday afternoon.
Nick Fortes homered and hit a run-scoring double, Junior Caminero added a solo shot, and the visiting Tampa Bay Rays beat the Houston Astros 3-1 to extend the longest active win streak in the major leagues to nine games. The Rays have homered in a season-high eight consecutive games. Meanwhile, in New York, Ben Rice hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the third inning, and the Yankees halted a seven-game losing skid with a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.
The Ottawa Redblacks did a lot of things right, but it still wasn’t enough as they lost 27-22 to the defending Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. Ottawa dropped to 0-and-4 on the season, while the visitors improved to 3-and-1. Trailing 27-22 late in the game, the Redblacks moved deep into Saskatchewan territory, but turned the ball over on downs after coming up short on a third-and-one gamble at the 15-yard-line.
Jhon Arias scored off a sharp cross from Luis Suárez in the opening minutes, and Colombia controlled Ghana on a sweltering night at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, allowing Los Cafeteros to advance to the Round of 16 at the World Cup with a 1-0 win. Colombia will play Switzerland on Tuesday at B-C Place Stadium in Vancouver for a berth in the quarterfinals.
Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime has advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon after a straight-sets win over American qualifier Michael Zheng on Friday. The Montreal native will next face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Earlier, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski advanced in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
