Nathan Eovaldi struck out nine in seven shutout innings to win his third straight start, Justin Foscue homered and drove in three runs, and the visiting Texas Rangers held on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4. Jacob Latz pitched the ninth for his 16th save. The Jays, who got a two-run homer from Kazuma Okamoto, have lost four in a row and two straight to the Rangers.
Leandro Trossard scored a pair of goals and Belgium overcame a slow start at the World Cup to advance to the knockout round with a 5-1 victory over New Zealand in Vancouver. Belgium finished atop Group G and will face a third-place finisher on Wednesday in Seattle. The match was played simultaneously to the other group finale in Seattle between Egypt and Iran, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Cape Verde completed an improbable run through the group stage with a third straight World Cup draw to become the smallest country to earn a spot in the knockout round following a scoreless result against Saudi Arabia. The small island nation off the western coast of Africa will play reigning World Cup champion Argentina in Miami on July 3rd.
The Toronto Argonauts defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 40-34, handing the defending Grey Cup champions their first defeat of the young C-F-L season. Both teams now have 2-and-1 records following Friday’s “home” game for the Argos at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium. It was the first of three Toronto home games moved to alternate venues due to conflicts with the 2026 World Cup schedule. Argos’ Q-B Trevor Harris threw for 409 yards and two touchdowns.
Gabby Williams had 16 points and four rebounds, Kiah Stokes and Kaitlyn Chen each scored 13 points, and the Golden State Valkyries edged the visiting Atlanta Dream 78-75 in W-N-B-A action. Jordin Canada scored 23 points for the Dream, while Angel Reese had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Whitehorse-born winger Gavin McKenna was selected first overall in Friday’s N-H-L draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The pick was announced in Buffalo by Canadian pop icon and Maple Leafs fan Justin Bieber. The Vancouver Canucks took Caleb Malhotra third overall, while the Calgary Flames selected Carson Carels sixth overall, and the Winnipeg Jets took Viggo Bjorck eighth overall. The draft resumes Saturday with rounds two to seven.
