Sports Roundup – September 14

Sep 14, 2019 | Sports

Friday evening at Scotia Speedworld, Emily Chisholm of Antigonish won the 2019 Beginner Bandolero championship. Emily finished first and was the points leader finishing of the year.

It’s take two for the Lucas Oil 150 at Riverside International Speedway. Hurricane Dorian led to the event being postponed from last week. Truro’s Dylan Blenkhorn leads the chase for the championship with the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour as the series contests its second-to-last race for the season. Local favourites Donald Chisholm and George Koszkulics are both expected to race. Fans will also see Pictou’s up-and-coming racer Austin MacDonald make his Pro Stock Tour debut. The teenager will drive a car out of the King Racing shop owned by his grandfather, racing legend Rollie MacDonald. In addition, there are championship-deciding races for the Napa Sportsman Series and the Passione Flooring East Coast Mini Stock Tour. Racing begins at 4.

Because of the delay to the Lucas Oil 150, the Atlantic Oliver Tire 200 series finale at Scotia Speedworld has been rescheduled for Sept. 28 starting at 4 p.m.

The B-C Lions have finally put an end to their losing streak. Mike Reilly led the Lions to a 29-5 win over the visiting Ottawa Redblacks that snapped a seven-game winless skid. The veteran quarterback threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 31 yards and another two T-Ds.

Rookie Bo Bichette gave the fans at Rogers Centre something to cheer about. Bichette hit a walk-off home run to left field in a 6-5 Toronto victory against the A-L East-leading Yankees. New York used a five-run fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead before the Jays stormed back for the victory.

A posthumous study of Stan Mikita’s brain shows the hockey Hall of Famer suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy at the time of his death a year ago. Doctor Ann McKee announced the findings during the Concussion Legacy Foundation’s Chicago Honors Dinner at the request of Mikita’s family. C-T-E is a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated blows to the head.

Restricted free-agent forward Mitch Marner is locked in for six more years with the Maple Leafs. Marner and Toronto agreed on a new contract today for six years with an average annual value of $10-point-8-9-3 million dollars U-S. Marner’s contract status had been a major talking point as training camp began without him.

Dallas Stars forward Corey Perry has a broken foot that could sideline him for the opener with his new team. Perry said on the opening day of training camp that he tripped on a step earlier in the week and broke a small bone in his left foot. The October 3rd opener at home against Boston is less than three weeks away.
