Sports Roundup – September 28

Sep 28, 2019 | Sports

University Sport:

In Soccer, the X-Men blanked Saint Mary’s 3-0, while the X-Women also shutout the Huskies 5-0. Both teams will host Universite de Moncton tomorrow: the women at 1 o’clock, followed by the men at 3:15.

The X-Women Rubgy squad continues to dominate the league, this time defeating Acadia 38-14 in Wolfville. The Axewomen will visit Antigonish looking for payback on Saturday October 5.

The X-Women were also dominant in hockey, thrashing Dalhousie 7-2 in exhibition play. They’re on the Island today to face UPEI at 3. They start the regular season on Friday on the road versus Mount Allison.

Also in action today: The X-Men football team play Mount Allison at 2pm.

At the Antigonish Arena, the X-Men Hockey team faces off with UPEI at 7.

In Basketball, the X-Women play a pre-season match against Mount Saint Vincent in Halifax at 2:30.

The Cape Breton West Islanders play the Steele Subaru Major Midgets in Port Hood tonight at 6, while the Weeks Major Midgets are at the Wellness Centre facing off with Cole Harbour. Puck drops at 7.

In Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA, the Northern Subway Selects look for their third straight win of the season as they host the Edza West Reds at the Wellness Centre at Noon.

In Major Bantam, the Novas host Kings Mutual at the Antigonish Arena at 3pm. The Wearwell Bombers are at the Wellness Centre facing off with the Dartmouth Whalers at 4:30.

The Tiger-Cats’ defence came up big on the road to earn a 33-13 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Hamilton linebacker Simoni Lawrence set a C-F-L record with 17 defensive tackles in the game, breaking Reggie Hunt’s old mark. The Ticats are a league-best 11-and-3.

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo hopes the disappointment of watching the visiting team celebrate a playoff berth at the Rogers Centre wasn’t lost on his young players. The Tampa Bay Rays’ 6-2 victory against Toronto, coupled with the Washington Nationals 8-2 win over the visiting Cleveland Indians, clinched an American League wild-card spot for the Rays.

Andrew Miller and Ryan Helsley were hit hard as St. Louis’ bullpen stumbled during an 8-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Despite the loss, the Cardinals’ magic number for clinching their first division title since 2015 was sliced to two when second-place Milwaukee lost 11-7 at Colorado.

Red Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner intend to slash payroll to get under the luxury tax threshold next season, saying they fired Dave Dombrowski as president of operations because of differing opinions on how to build for the future. They also said no matter who replaces Dombrowski, Alex Cora will return for a third season as manager despite this year’s disappointment.

Restricted free-agent forward Patrik Laine is returning to Winnipeg in time for the first puck drop of the regular season. Laine and the Winnipeg Jets agreed to a two-year, $13-point-5-million dollar U-S contract. The 21-year-old Finn has been practising with S-C Bern in Switzerland, but will be back for when the Jets open the season October 4th in New York against the Rangers.

Sidney Crosby was emotional as he watched his Number 87 retired league-wide by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Crosby returned to Rimouski, Quebec for a pre-game ceremony in his honour. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain played major junior for the Rimouski Oceanic for two seasons between 2003 and 2005.
