St. FX, Antigonish Town And County and Paqtnkek to develop a Regional Climate Strategy

Nov 15, 2019 | Local News

Municipal units and the local university are teaming up to help try and tackle climate change.

Last night, StFX president Kevin Wamsley, Antigonish Town Mayor Laurie Boucher, Antigonish County Warden Owen McCarron, and Paqtnkek Chief PJ Prosper announced a new partnership aiming to establish a regional climate strategy.  The announcement came prior to Blair Feltmate’s talk as part of Climate and Democracy Week at StFX.

All of the partners have significant interests in the future of the area, Wamsley said, adding they believe they can be proactive in helping people prepare themselves for severe climate change. Wamsley said they can talk about shared energy resources and recycling, and working for residents in the region to take on the problem.

The university president said StFX is working on climate change on its own grounds  with items such as a sustainability committee dealing with a climate strategy for the school. StFX is looking to reduce its carbon footprint as an institution and use its expertise to serve the region, he added.
