St. FX Human Kinetics Professors Welcome Canada’s 24-hour Movement Guidelines

Nov 2, 2020 | Local News

Two St. FX Human Kinetics professors are applauding the release of Canada’s first-ever 24-hour Movement Guidelines.   The guidelines show Canadians what a healthy 24 hours looks like when it comes to physical activity, sedentary behaviours and sleep. For 18 to 64 year olds, it recommends moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity of at least 150 minutes a week, muscle strengthening at least twice a week, several hours of light physical activities such as standing, 7 to 9 hours of sleep and limiting sedentary time.

Dr. Angie Kolen says she likes how all our movement behaviours are linked in these guidelines.

Dr. Ryan Reid says he’s also pleased the guidelines focus on more activity is better with a focus on light activity now, more than just moderate and vigorous activity.

Kolen says including light activity in the guidelines is key to getting people moving who haven’t been active for a while.  She says it’s a good stepping stone to meeting more intense activity listed in the guidelines.
The guidelines were developed by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, the Public Health Agency of Canada, Queen’s University, ParticipACTION and a network of researchers and stakeholders across Canada.
