Efforts underway to Recruit Doctors to the Guysborough Area

May 7, 2020 | Local News

Challenges remain in recruiting doctors to the Guysborough area.

That’s the word from Dr. Jeremy Hillyard, medical site lead at St. Martha’s, when it comes to bringing in doctors to work at the Guysborough Memorial Hospital and the attached Dr. Anita Foley Health Services Centre. Hillyard said it’s difficult to get people to work in small locations, particularly where there is frequent on-call work. For instance, he said, in Guysborough it would be one night-on, one night-off, in addition to day work.

Ideally, they would like to hire up to three physicians for the area. Hillyard said the recruiters don’t have any hot leads but they are in discussions with people. Recruiters followed the traditional avenues in hitting recruitment fairs and placing ads, along with engaging residents as they finish up their training.

He said the Guysborough Memorial Hospital Foundation has been helpful in bringing in locums and offering housing. Hillyard also credited the Municipality of the District of Guysborough for offering signing bonuses.
