St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish is in for a name change.
The news comes as the Sisters of St. Martha and the province work through the transition of ending the Mission Assurance Agreement between two parties. It expires at the end of September.
A release from Nova Scotia Health indicates that both the authority and the Sisters agree that renaming the hospital is the next step that needs to be taken in transition planning.

Nova Scotia Health says it is planning internal engagement sessions and activities for staff, physicians, learners and volunteers. The discussions including honouring and celebrating the Sisters’ legacy and their service to the community, and naming considerations reflecting the geography and future identity of the hospital that aligns with Nova Scotia Health’s Naming Policy. Other areas of discussion include St. Martha’s strengths and culture and supporting staff, physicians, learners and volunteers through the transition.
The Sisters of St. Martha, in a release, say they are pleased that the ministry of Spiritual and Religious Care will remain at the hospital as a blessing for people of all faith traditions. The Sisters say they will also work closely in the coming months with the Health and Wellness Department and Nova Scotia Health to design creative ways to celebrate the 120-year history of St. Martha’s Hospital.
