St. Peter’s Canal to Celebrate 150th Anniversary

Parks Canada is celebrating the 150th anniversary of St. Peter’s Canal this weekend. The celebration is in collaboration with the communities of St. Peter’s and Polotek.

The festivities will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will begin with an official ceremony at 10. There will be children’s activities and an outdoor parent and tot session at 11, a barbecue at noon, live music beginning at one and a parade of sail at 2:30.

There will be fireworks at dusk.

Built on an isthmus, the 800-meter St. Peter’s Canal National Historic Site joints the Atlantic Ocean to Bras d’Or Lake meandearing through Battery Provincial Park. Those passing through the locks by boat during the 150th anniversary can pick up a commemorative boating certificate.
