The Stellarton Memorial Rink is no longer owned by the town. At last night’s meeting, town

council passed a resolution to sell the aging facility to the non-profit Stellarton Memorial Community Centre Association for one dollar.

Remarking on the motion, Mayor Danny McGillivray noted that council had looked at many different ways to continue operating the rink, but that decades of deferred maintenance meant the mutli-million dollar price tag to bring the building up to code was too high to bear. Council will cover the annual property tax bill for the facility through a grant to the Association, and fundraising donations to the group can go through the town in order that tax-deductible receipts can be issued.

If in the future the SMCCA is unable to operate the facility and decides to sell it, council will have right of first refusal to buy it back.
