Police are investigating a sudden death that occurred on Tuesday in Stellarton.
At 8:00 a.m. Stellarton police responded to a report from Nova Scotia Power employees of a deceased male located behind the sub-station on North Foord Street. NSP staff were searching for the source of a power disruption when they located the man. The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed at this time.
This incident is being investigated as an attempted theft of copper wire.
A release from Stellarton police states the theft of copper wire can cause serious injury, even death – and it can increase risk to public safety as well.
Live wire can carry more than 25,000 volts of electricity so there is a very high risk of electrocution.
It can also generate an unstable electrical current for customers in the area and create very dangerous working conditions for crews.
The theft itself could cause an outage or a service interruption in order to make repairs.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information about the incident or video from the area to call 902-752-6160. Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling toll-free 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submitting a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca or using the P3 Tips App.
