Dr. JH Gillis Regional Royals Track and Field

At the NSSAF Track & Field Provincial Championships held at Beazley Field  in Dartmouth this past weekend saw some local schools and athletes excel.  St. Andrew Junior School won the Junior Division Provincial Banner, as well as the Junior Female team Banner.   St. Andrew Junior School athletes who medalled were Malia Artibello – gold in 400m, Siona Chisholm – 2 gold in the 1500m & 3000m & silver in the 800m,  Mairin Canning – 2 Bronze in the 800m & 1500m, Emma Cameron – Bronze in the 3000m, SAJS Female 4 x 100 relay team – gold, and 4 x 400m relay team  of Sarah Stewart, Siona Chisholm, Mairin Canning and Malia Aritibello smashed the 1982 Provincial record with a time of 4:17:83 capturing gold medals.

Aidan MacDonald of Dr. J.H.Gillis Senior Girls – Gold in the 1500 and silver in the 800, Abigail MacDonald – Bronze in the 800, & Stephanie Wallace – Bronze in Intermediate Girls Discus.

Jayden Muise of Bayview Education Centre – Bronze in Junior Boys Shot put & Luke vanZutphen – Bronze in Junior Boys Long Jump.

 It was a successful weekend at provincial tournaments for several local high school teams.
North Nova Education Centre won two provincial titles. In Division one Boys Rugby the Gryphons downed Sir John A MacDonald 21-5 in the title game.  In Division One Girls Fastpitch, North Nova downed Avon View in the final 15-2.
Two other local teams won silver medals.   In Division one Boys Fastpitch, Dalbrae Academy took Silver, losing to South Colchester in the final 5-0.  In Division 3 Boys slo-pitch, Richmond Academy picked up the Silver Medal, losing to Bridgewater in a close contest in the final 20-19.
In Track and Field, Pictou Academy finished first among Division 4 schools, Cape Breton Highlands Academy was third.  Division 2, Dr. JH Gillis Regional High finished second behind Central Kings Rural High.
