Two Local Hockey Players win Provincial Sport Awards

Two athletes with local connections have picked up provincial sport awards. At the Support-4-Sport Awards ceremony Saturday night Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton, a member of the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team was named Female Team Athlete of the Year. Drake Batherson, who grew up in the Antigonish Minor Hockey system, won the Male Team Athlete of the Year award. Batherson was a key member of Team Canada that won gold at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Buffalo

Cape Breton West Islanders, Blayre Turnbull and Drake Batherson nominated for Provincial Sports Awards

Athletes and officials with ties to Northeastern Nova Scotia are in the running for provincial sport awards. Sport Nova Scotia has announced its finalists for its Support-4-Sport Awards, recognizing the province’s greatest athletes, teams, coaches, officials and volunteers in amateur sport over the past year.

Among the local nominees are the Cape Breton West Islanders hockey team, the 2017 Major Midget Hockey National Champions for Team of the Year. Stellarton’s Blayre Turnbull, a member of the Canadian Women’s Olympic Hockey Team is a finalist for Female Team Athlete of the Year.

Drake Batherson, who grew up in the Antigonish Minor Hockey system and a member of the Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship, is a finalist for Male Team Athlete of the Year.

Troy Ryan, an assistant coach of the Canadian Women’s Olympic Hockey Team and a former coach of the Antigonish Junior A Bulldogs and Pictou County Weeks Crushers is a finalist for Coach of the Year.

The award ceremony will be held on Saturday night at the Halifax Convention Centre.

Batherson remembers his Minor Hockey Days in Antigonish

A former Antigonish minor hockey player and World Junior Gold medalist has fond memories of playing in the area. Drake Batherson had the hot stick in Buffalo

Batherson resided in the Antigonish area during his early playing days and says that the hockey program in the area allowed him the opportunity to get more ice time than he could ever imagine:

Drake Batherson signs with Senators

A former Cape Breton Screaming Eagle has signed his first NHL contract with the Sens. Drake Batherson signed a three year entry level contract with the team, after a great year where he had 58 points with the Eagles.
Batherson has a connection to the Antigonish area; his father, Norm, served as assistant coach for the St.FX X-Men, and also played junior hockey in the area.
