Coach and Antigonish native John Brophy dies

 Former NHL and ECHL head coach and Antigonish native John Brophy has died. He was 83.

Brophy, died after a lengthy illness yesterday.  He is the second in wins for a coach in professional hockey, behind Scotty Bowman.

Brophy was named head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs prior to the 1986-87 season, leading Toronto into the second round of the playoffs. He was fired 33 games into the 1988-89 season after the Leafs got off to an 11-20-2 start.

Brophy later became head coach ECHL’s Hampton Roads Admirals, beginning his career with the club in the 1989-90 season. He led the Admirals to three league titles over 11 seasons.

He finished his ECHL coaching career with two years behind the bench of the Wheeling Nailers, retiring after the 2002-03 season.  In 2003, the ECHL dedicated their coach of the year award in honour of John Brophy.

A private memorial service for John Brophy will be held at a later date.
