Antigonish Town and County Councils meet with School Board and School Options Committee on future of local schools

A joint town and county council meeting was held at St. Andrew Jr. School in order to have more discussions around school closures in the Antigonish area. Council, the school board and it’s school options committee had open conversations regarding the possibility of a school being closed – an issue brought to the forefront after H.M MacDonald was put on the chopping block at an SRSB Working Committee Meeting.

Last night’s meeting featured a motion from council to not close H.M MacDonald, or any other school for the time being. Mayor Laurie Boucher and Warden Russel Boucher were both pleased by the vote:

A Strait Regional School Board Meeting will be held tonight to vote on the Dr. JH Gillis feeder system and if any closures will happen. This meeting happens at 7:00 tonight at the Strait Regional School Board Office.

Antigonish Town and County Council to meet on future of area schools

A special joint meeting will be held tonight to discuss the talks regarding school closures in Antigonish area. It was announced last week during a working committee meeting for the school board that the school in Maryvale is at risk of being closed.

Mayor Laurie Boucher discussed the meeting at last night’s town council meeting. She says the town doesn’t want to see a school close, but she understands why the SRSB is in this position.  Boucher says tonight’s meeting will be an opportunity to share information among members of the school board, the School Options Committee and the two councils.

Tonight’s meeting will be at 6:30 at the St. Andrew Junior School cafeteria.

Boucher says the council will express concerns on how this would affect the community.

The meeting is open to the public, but there will no opportunity for residents to speak at the session.
