The spring lobster fishing season for the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence is shaping up to be a good one.
Paul van de Wiel of the North Bay Fishermen’s Co-op, says they’re pleased with the season to date.
Van de Wiel says the price the fishermen are getting for their catch is at the higher end of what they’ve been receiving the last few years.
The start of the Lobster Fishing season in area 26-B North from Margaree to Pleasant Bay is on hold. High winds are the culprit.
The season was supposed to start Saturday. Following a conference call Monday, the Federal Fisheries Department indicated the fishery will be closed until weather conditions improve. It is tentatively set to open Saturday morning, May 13th when it’s expected the weather will be more favourable.
However, D-F-O will hold daily conference calls this week with fishermen to discuss a possible opening before then.
There approximately 108 lobster licenses in area 26-B North.
