St. FX Confers Two Honourary Degrees at Fall Convocation

StFX University presented an honorary doctorate to one of Canada`s leading academics over

Dr. Thomas De Koninck was on hand at the StFX Fall Convocation on Saturday afternoon to receive the honorary degree.

De Konick is an internationally-known philosopher and a former Rhodes Scholar with a Masters of Arts in Literature from Oxford and a PhD from Laval, where he is taught for decades until 2015.

A release from the university stated De Koninck is perhaps best known for his studies on human dignity and for his writings in the philosophy of education. An active member and past president of the Canadian Philosophical Association, he is also a member of the Order of Canada.

During his address to the audience, De Konick shared his thoughts on universities as powerhouses of freedom. He touted education as means of preventing the decline of democracies.


In closing, DeKonick offered three cheers for the university.

be at the forefront of plate tectonics. He was one of the first geologists to apply plate tectonic theory to specific mountain belts. He holds numerous awards and several honorary degrees.  He held faculty positions at Cambridge, SUNY-Albany, Durham and Oxford universities as well as visiting fellowships on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dewey is familiar with Antigonish, with his first academic position in North America taking him to Arisaig to instruct geological field methods for M.I.T. During his address, Dewey said it was a special pleasure and honour to received the honorary degree from StFX.


Dewey said StFX has continued its tradition of valuing students and faculty.   In closing, he said if the world would spend vastly more on education and vastly less on arms, perhaps in another generation we could see a happier and more fulfilled mankind.

theory to specific mountain belts will be one of the recipients. Dr. Thomas De Konick is on tap to receive the other for work in human dignity and his work in the philosophy of education.

Dr. Randy Lauff was also named as the recipient of the 2018 outreach award and Kelly Thompson will receive the 2018 outstanding staff teaching award.

Students will receive over 200 degrees and diplomas, including 41 graduates of the Coady Institute’s diploma in development leadership program.

The convocation is set for 3 p.m. at the Charles V Keating Centre on December 1.

Convocation, X-Ring Ceremony this weekend at St. FX

It’s a very busy weekend at St. FX University.  Saturday is fall convocation, where more than 200 degrees and diplomas will be conferred, including graduates of the Coady International Institute’s Diploma in Development Leadership Program.  Photojournalist and social justice advocate Palagummi Sainith of India will receive an honourary degree today.  Sainith is familiar with St. FX; he was the 2015 Coady Institute’s Chair in Social Justice.  The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.
On Sunday, close to 900 senior students will receive their coveted class ring, or X-Ring as it is known.  A special ceremony will be held Sunday Afternoon at 2.  The guest speaker is 1996 graduate Robyn Tingley, founder and president of consulting firm, GlassSky of Saint John, New Brunswick.  She is recognized as one of Canada’s 100 top powerful women.

professor Dr. Norine Verberg will receive the 2017 outreach award through her work with St.FX for SAFE. The group was able to raise $100,000, which will help sponsor two Syrian refugee families.

Also being recognized is the Antigonish County Adult Learning Association through the community partner recognition award. ACALA is a not-for-profit charitable community organization that has for over 20 years delivered adult literacy.

World renowned photojournalist and author Palagummi Sainath of India will receive an honourary degree from St. FX at Convocation. Sainith was the Coady International Institute’s 2015 chair in Social Justice. Ann Marie Smith of Jamaica, is graduating class speaker. Convocation will be held this Saturday at 3:00 in the Keating Centre. The X-Ring ceremony will be Sunday afternoon at 2.
