Town of Antigonish passes densification by-law

Jan 20, 2026 | Local News

Antigonish Town Council passed second reading of a municipal planning strategy and land use by-law regarding Housing Accelerator Fund densification.

Council passed second read with a vote of 5-2, with Mayor Sean Cameron and councillor Jack Sullivan voting against.  Cameron said the intent of the bylaw is to densify the town, remove the administrative burden so developers can deal directly with the Eastern District Planning Commission, and help provide more housing units by allowing people to put accessory dwelling units on their properties.

Cameron explained his reasoning for voting against the by-law, having also voted against the first reading.

The by-law still must be approved by the province.
