Antigonish Town Council and staff are again working on the unpleasant odour coming from the area’s sewage treatment plant. As in the last few years, residents are dealing with a smell coming from the plant, which began around the first weekend of July.
The town’s web site states the newly installed permanent recirculation line is now online at the plant with the installation ensuring consistent and continuous delivery of oxygenated water to the section of the lagoon needing it most.

Other mitigation measures include moving oxygen rich water to the front, adding cold water, using deodorizers, ongoing monitoring, and removing sludge. An aeration project is underway and expected to be completed by the end of the month, which includes areators and blowers. Earlier this month, the town awarded a tender for screening and aeration upgrades to the plant to Avondale Construction at around $6.2 million plus HST, with the project expected to take a year to complete. The town, the county of Antigonish, and the province funded the project.
Antigonish Mayor Sean Cameron said staff did their best to line up equipment for work at the plant ahead of time.
Kyle Meisner, infrastructure and engineering director for the town, said council took the matter seriously, noting council passed the capital budget early this year, with a tender for work at the plant going out the next day.
