The town of Pictou has passed a new Public Sewers By-law.
Taking effect in 2026, the new by-law switches the sewer operating charge from a service-base to a usage-base, calculated based on water use.

It also gives council the ability to create a capital charge for sewer users in the budget to re-coup capital costs of new projects if they wish to do so, and allows the town to repair sewer laterals to homes if the property owners don’t do so in a timely fashion.
Before the vote, CAO Kyle Slaunwhite noted to council that he had not recieved any feedback from citizens between the first and second readings of the proposed bylaw.
