The Town of Port Hawkesbury will be flying a different flag this summer.
Deputy Mayor Todd Barrett said at last night’s monthly public meeting of Port Hawkesbury Town Council that the town should start flying the Acadian flag during Acadian Heritage Month in August. Town council unanimously approved the motion.
National Acadian Day, or the Day of the Assumption, is celebrated each year on August 15th in Nova Scotia.

CAO Terry Doyle said the 2026 Flag Raising Schedule is similar to the list of flags that was approved last year, and what has been approved in recent years.
After the meeting, Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton called it a “wonderful idea” because the town has many synergies, joint endeavours, and shared services with its neighbouring municipalities.
The mayor noted there are “a lot of Acadians living in Port Hawkesbury,” and there are many Acadians living on both sides of the town’s boundaries, so it’s important to acknowledge this aspect of local history and culture.
