The town of Trenton is deciding to leave the New Glasgow Regional Police Service, which they have been part of since 2011.
In a letter dated June 10 to New Glasgow town council, Trenton council informed them of their intention to terminate their policing contract and have the RCMP take over policing of their town, citing concerns over rising capital costs with the NGRP.
New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks says that the New Glasgow Police will no longer provide policing services to Trenton as of March 31st of next year.
In the meantime, New Glasgow has informed Trenton that as part of the transition, they recommend Trenton take over responsibilities for crossing guards – such as payroll and scheduling – as of September first. New Glasgow Regional Police & New Glasgow town staff have begun an assessment of how the end of Trenton’s contract will affect police operations and will bring that report to council in the near future.
