A well known athlete and community volunteer has died.
Sam Gero was 95 years old.
Gero was a member of the Amherst Little League Hall of Fame and the Antigonish Community Fence of Fame. A strong supporter of local sports, he was often seen at hockey and ball games,and was also a referee in hockey and coached minor ball and Special Olympics.

He had an excellent playing career, and even tried out for Major League Baseball’s Brooklyn Dodgers in his youth.
Gero worked for Eastern Auto for a number of years before moving to the Antigonish Arena, where he worked until his retirement. He was also an auxiliary RCMP constable and was the first Black town councillor in Antigonish.
A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at the East Coast Credit Union Social Enterprise Centre on Tuesday from 4 to 9 pm.
