Things keep moving along for the Whale Sanctuary project in Guysborough County.
Charles Vinick, CEO of the Whale Sanctuary Project, said the Wine Harbour site hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on June 19.
Vinick said they hope to welcome whales in the spring or summer of next year, noting that is dependent on continued fundraising for the project. The coming months will see the refurbishment of an existing wharf. Vinick said the overall cost of the porject is around $13 million, US, with fundraising left to do.
The Whale Sanctuary project also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw chiefs with commitments to collaborate on educational outreach and research opportunities. A release states the MOU serves as recognition of shared values in respect to marine animals and their long-term welfare in Mi’kma’ki.
