Several local residents were awarded King Charles III Coronation Medals Monday, in recognition of signficant service. The medals were presented at Government House in Halifax. It was the first medal presentation ceremony in the country. The federal government established the medal program last May.
The 28 medal recipients represent a cross-section of Nova Scotians who have made significant contributions to Canada, the province or their community. The ceremony was held on the first anniversary of the King’s coronation.
Recipients with ties to the local area include Port Hawkesbury native and respected Nova Scotia winemaker Gina Haverstock, Inverness County Warden Bonny MacIsaac, Maurice LeLievre of Grant Etang, Deanna Lynn Mohamed of New Glasgow and Yvon Samson of Petit-de-Grat.
The medal will be awarded to 30,000 Canadians. Nominations for the medal are made from a diverse group of national organizations. Each MP and senator can nominate 20 people.
