Pictou West MLA Karla MacFarlane Elected Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly

History was made in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly Thursday.  Pictou West MLA Karla MacFarlane  became the assembly’s first female speaker, elected by her peers in the house.

MacFarlane touched on the significance of her election as she took the Speakers chair.
MacFarlane, who was the province’s Community Services Minister and Minister of  L’nu Affairs replaces former Speaker Keith Bain.   MacFarlane thanked Bain for his dedication to the role.
Among those offering congratulations to MacFarlane on her election is Central Nova MP Sean Fraser. Fraser says while they represent different political parties, she is a great partner to work with. Fraser says it’s amazing that the longest standing legislature in the country has chosen a female speaker and Pictou County is proud of one their own.
