Professional theatre companies in Nova Scotia are asking the province for immediate help that
will assist in stabilizing their industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. The theatre companies were forced to close their doors during the pandemic and have yet to reopen. Some, such as Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre have lost their entire 2020 season. Festival Antigonish estimates its revenue loss is at least $300,000 this fiscal year over the cancelling of its performances. Festival Antigonish Managing Director Reema Fuller says without emergency funding from the province, the theatre company doesn’t have a clear path forward for reopening.
The theatre companies sent a joint letter seeking provincial financial support to Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Leo Glavine. The theatre companies say the minister signalled in the spring support would be coming, but so far no financial commitment has been made
