A Pictou County group is receiving Federal money to help support fish habitats in the area. The Pictou County Rivers Association has received $25,000 from the Environmental Damages Fund for restoration projects.
The funds will be used for the restoriation of fish habitat in the West River watershed, with focus on activities for Six mile Brook, a tributary of the West River. The goal of the project is to reduce the amount of aggregate materials that enter into the system.
The funding is being dished out in part because of the two hundred and twenty five thousand dollar penalty against Northern Pulp. A pipeline break in May of last year resulted in 47 million litres of liquid waste being spilled into an area leading to Pictou Harbour.

Over $100,000 has been awarded to a number of projects this year that supports conservation efforts for wild Atlantic Salmon in Eastern Canada. The Atlantic Salmon Conservation Fund announced funding for several areas, including a few local projects.
The Cheticamp River Salmon Association received $9,500, Inverness South Anglers Association received $5,000 in funding and the Pictou County Rivers Association got $7,500 for conservation efforts.
The funding is provided through a trust fund, and each group helps improve the conservation status of salmon populations in their local river. It could be by improving fish habitat or stabilizing stream banks.
