Take Back the Night Rally and March to be held in Anitgonish tonight

Sep 26, 2019 | Local News

Antigonish’s annual Take Back The Night event protesting sexualized violence  is set for this evening.

The longstanding event starts with a rally on the steps of the Angus L MacDonald Library beginning at 7 p.m. There is also a pizza and poster making event at Bloomfield Centre at 5:30 p.m.

Annie Chau, advancing women’s equality coordinator with the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre and one of the organizers of the event, said this year’s edition featured a different lead-up campaign.

Organizers put up message boxes around the community to gather messages of support to survivors of sexualized violence. Chau said this offered a voice to those who couldn’t attend the event and some of the messages will be shared at the rally.

When asked why Take Back The Night is an important event, Chau said sexualized violence and gender based violence are prevalent issues. She said Take Back The Night helps brings the community together to discuss ways to be more supportive for survivors and challenge societal norms perpetuating the underlying reasons why the violence happens
