Town and County of Antigonish Prepare for Arrival of Hurricane Fiona

Sep 23, 2022 | Local News

Officials with the Town and County of Antigonish say they are actively tracking the path of Hurricane Fiona and preparations are underway to prepare for the impacts of the storm.

The Antigonish Town and County Emergency Management Team have been working closely with the Antigonish Regional Emergency Management Coordinator to identify areas of concern and plan for power outages and potential flooding.

As part of its pre-emptive measures, the Town will close the Antigonish Community Dog Park today at noon. The Creighton Lane Parking lot will also be closed at 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Public works departments and municipal facilities with both the Town and County have been conducting storm preparedness. Staff will also be on stand-by throughout the weekend.

Antigonish CAO Jeff Lawrence says it’s asking residents to prepare for extended power outages by having a 72 hour kit ready, clear yards of debris, secure barbecues, trampolines and outdoor play sets, bring in outside furniture and move cars off the street. He also says residents should stay home not only for the duration of the storm but also in the hours following to allow crews to assess damage and not hinder clean-up efforts.

St. FX University says due to the expected severe weather, the campus, with the exception of Morrison Hall will close and all buildings will be locked down from 6 tonight until 12 noon Sunday. Essential services will remain operational.
